Romanesque church of Sant Sebastià de Montmajor

Sant Sebastià de Montmajor

A village with more than a thousand years of history

Sant Sebastià de Montmajor is a small rural hamlet with barely six permanent residents, located between the mountains of Gallifa and El Farell, within the municipality of Caldes de Montbui (Vallès Oriental). A peaceful place that has preserved its essence for over a thousand years.

The village is documented as early as 1065 and, in 1098, came under the ownership of the Monastery of Sant Cugat, which promoted the construction of the Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the true heart of the settlement. Thanks to ecclesiastical protection and medieval peace agreements, a small rural community was established that has changed very little over time.

The church, with a single nave, barrel vault and square bell tower, preserves a Renaissance altarpiece, mural paintings by Antoni Vila Arrufat and a polychrome wooden sculpture of Saint Sebastian. Its uniqueness led to its reproduction in the Poble Espanyol during the 1929 Universal Exhibition.

The village consists of around ten houses, a small square, the restaurant La Rectoría and a cemetery at the highest point. With hardly any services and at the end of a winding road, Sant Sebastià de Montmajor now lives from quiet tourism, linked to hiking, nature and the search for authenticity.

Caldes de Montbui

A spa town 30 kilometres from Barcelona

Caldes de Montbui has one of the hottest springs in Europe: the Font del Lleó will surprise you with its constant flow of water at 74 degrees. It is no wonder the town has several spas and an old quarter with fascinating Roman ruins.

Caldes is also known for its food. You can enjoy a traditional Catalan meal or more sophisticated cooking in its fine-dining restaurants. The town is also the birthplace of carquinyolis, a hard almond biscuit served with coffee.

Craftspeople here carry on centuries of know-how: the basket makers, who used the hot water to soften their materials, and the Sanmartí family, who have been making noodles and other pasta since 1700.

We also recommend a visit to the church of Santa Maria, attached to the royal palace until the Middle Ages, a splendour of architecture and centuries-old ornament.
